In 2025 Heritage Victoria’s maritime heritage at risk program completed ten years of activities to protect the state’s underwater cultural heritage.

In November 2016, Heritage Victoria commenced the maritime heritage at risk program designed to identify and prioritise the states most significant shipwrecks and aircraft wrecks; provide an assessment of current and future risks; and implement a site management program to better safeguard them from human and environmental interference.

The program also allows coastal communities to be directly involved in the ongoing protection of local underwater cultural heritage.
