Project summary

This imposing building on Albert Street, East Melbourne was built in a style known as ‘American Romanesque.’

As an academy for painters and sculptors, the Victorian Artists Society has hosted artists of the calibre of Streeton, Chevalier, Roberts and Conder. It was also the home of Dame Nellie Melba’s music conservatorium for more than 30 years. The Victorian Artist Society is still in operation and is open daily to the public.

A $25,000 grant has produced a Conservation Management Plan to identify the repairs and restoration planned by the Victorian Artists Society. The CMP has allowed for a deeper understanding of the buildings history and its current condition. The CMP will guide future restoration works, including works to remediate water ingress, and enable the building to be correctly managed into the future.
