An $18,000 grant, provided on a matched funds basis, has identified the works required to restore the oldest continuously operating Theatre in Victoria. The Theatre Royal in Castlemaine was built in 1858 as a Theatre and was converted to cinema in the 1930s. The cinema continues to operate alongside a bar and bistro as well as hosting live events. It is highly valued by members of the community and has been a central part of Castlemaine's social and cultural life for 160 years.
The Theatre is displaying signs of movement. To understand how to stabilise the Theatre's structure, the first essential step was to carry out investigative works. The grant funded this investigation which included a geotechnical testing, structural inspection and recommended remediation works.
With this grant, the Government has assisted the owners implement a sound plan to conserve this Victorian Heritage Register listed building and valued community asset for the future.
