Created for an internationally acclaimed soprano to perform, the 400 seat Globe Theatre in Winchelsea has been renewed with a $70,000 grant from the Victorian Government. The Globe Theatre is a Winchelsea institution, hosting events ranging from antique roadshows to local theatre, public events and school plays.
Suffering water damage, the building’s beautiful 1920s pressed metal ceilings were rusting and its fine timber-work, rotting. The repairs have not only conserved the building but allowed the Winchelsea Movie Club to show films again. Nearly 100 years since Margorie practised her craft at the Theatre, going on to become the lead soprano for the Paris Opera Company, the Globe Theatre is conserved to ensure it continues to be a landmark building of value to new generations of Winchelsea.
This project is the result of a successful collaborative effort by the local community. Surf Coast Shire Mayor David Bell sees the grant as an investment in Winchelsea’s community:
Winchelsea has a strong sense of community, identity and heritage. The Globe Theatre takes pride of place in the main street, managed by community for community and hosting a range of activities including the Marjorie Lawrence heritage display.
