Permits are needed to protect the important features of heritage places and objects that are registered on the Victorian Heritage Register.
There is recognition that if significant places are to have a future, they need to be attractive and comfortable places in which to live and work. Alterations are often required to keep pace with the demands of modern life, but they must respect the importance of the place.
