Flemington Racecourse has joined the MCG as another iconic sporting place that now has the highest level of heritage protection in Victoria. Horse races have been run continuously at Flemington since 1840 when the first race meeting was held there.

The race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup, was first held at Flemington in 1861.

The Victorian Heritage Register, which includes more than 2000 places, is the official listing of places and objects which have been assessed as significant to the State of Victoria. Flemington was included on the national heritage list in 2006.
