Registrations

Considers which heritage places and objects are added to the Victorian Heritage Register and makes decisions on registration appeals.

Permits

Hears appeals and makes decisions on permit applications determined by Heritage Victoria.

Protocols and Planning

Reviews and develops policies, procedures and guidelines relating primarily to the statutory administration of the Heritage Act 1995.

Finance

Monitors the operation of the Heritage Fund and provides advice to the Heritage Council on all financial assistance matters.

Communications

Oversees the education and promotion activities of the Heritage Council. Also recommends the adoption of strategies for the delivery of the Heritage Council's responsibilities for education and promotion and to recommend the allocation of funds to those programs.

Advisory committees

Industrial/Engineering

Ensures industrial and engineering heritage places and objects are identified, protected and conserved on the basis of holistic advice.

Landscape

Advises the Heritage Council on landscapes of Cultural Heritage Significance in Victoria. Recommends priorities for identification of cultural landscapes, gardens, trees and plants, works, precincts and sites.

Archaeology

Advises the Heritage Council of Victoria on issues of archaeological heritage. One of it’s aims is to increase the knowledge and appreciation of archaeological heritage within the community. The committee is drawn from the archaeology and broader heritage communities and includes archaeologists, historians, planners and other professionals.

Historic Shipwrecks

Considers and advises the Heritage Council on all matters it thinks necessary in relation to historic shipwrecks, historic shipwreck relics and remains of ships and articles associated with ships that might be registered as historic shipwrecks or historic shipwreck relics.

Collections

Secures recognition and protection for significant collections of objects in Victoria, and supports management and other programs aimed at the conservation of these collections.

Technical

Supplements the skills and expertise of Heritage Victoria in technical and practical issues of conservation of (principally) built heritage, and to steer and monitor the standards of technical advice provided by the Heritage Victoria and the Heritage Council. It also aims to raise standards of, and promote best practice in, materials and conservation.

Religous Places

Provides the Heritage Council with advice on the broad range of heritage conservation issues facing places of religious worship. The Committee will develop a range of guidelines and initiatives, including Practice Notes on development issues facing churches, such as adaptive re-use and access to existing churches for people with disabilities, as well as Guidance Notes on the care and conservation of religious properties.

Local Government

Provides direction on the management of heritage protection through planning schemes, considers the design of new buildings in heritage areas, provides guidance on local heritage policies and controls and promotes the protection of places in planning schemes where recommended by the Heritage Council.
